History of Southtown & Lavaca

How the community took shape.

Lavaca grew from mission agricultural land into a residential neighborhood beginning in the nineteenth century. Working families, craftspeople, and small-business owners built caliche cottages, Victorian homes, and later Craftsman houses. Southtown emerged as a broader arts and revitalization district in the 1990s, connecting Lavaca, King William, Lone Star, and surrounding cultural corridors.
